These cartridges do not feature the new "time indicator strip". While this strip is a nice idea on the drawing board - it is merely a timed dye that changes colors after 30 days of water immersion. Unfortunately, this provides a false sense of security as your cartridges should be changed according to the bio-load of your tank - not by a set number of days.

Mechanical Filtration is increased by the absence of the "black plastic backer" the manufacturers like to market. These backers funnel all water through a few slits - decreasing the surface area of initial filtration and bogging down the waterways - effectively decreasing the life of your cartridge.
Biological Filtration is increased by the increased surface area of polyester backing to trap and grow beneficial bacteria that destroy amonia and nitrates.
Chemical Filtration is increased by the replacement of Pre-Washed Carbon with Air-Vacuumed Carbon. Virtually all foreign-made cartridges use Pre-Washed Carbon as it is cost-effective. A good grade of dry, highly activated Carbon will be very active when it is first introduced to the aquarium water. Carbon absorbs large amounts of pollutants and toxic gases over a short period of time. After the initial burst, it will continue to attract these pollutants at a slower pace. When it is exhausted - Carbon becomes virtually useless. Pre-Washed Carbon absorbs whatever chemicals, pollutants, and gases that are contained in the wash water - and does this at a very fast pace. Not only are you purchasing "used" carbon, the Carbon you receive now contains whatever contaminates that were in the water at the washing source
